Phoenix, AZ, United States (AHN) – Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Anderson will be given a chance to start anew in Arizona following a bumpy four seasons in Cleveland after the Cardinals announced Wednesday an agreement on a two-year contract.
The deal with the former Browns field general is worth $7.25 million, of which $3.25 million will be guaranteed, the Arizona Republic reported on its website.
Anderson, 26, who was released by Cleveland on March 9, reportedly indicated that he expects to be the No. 2 quarterback at Arizona behind the Cards current starter, Matt Leinart.
But the 6-foot-6, 230-pound Anderson, a former Oregon State standout, will also get chances to compete for the starting job, the Republic reported.
In 2005, Anderson joined the Browns after being placed on waivers by the Baltimore Ravens, who selected him in the sixth round of that year’s NFL Draft.
Being third in the Browns’ depth chart behind Trent Dilfer and Charlie Frye, he did not see any action that year but eventually broke out in 2007, when he passed for 3,787 yards and 29 TDs. His performance led to a Pro Bowl nod.
He struggled in the past two seasons, switching back and forth as the Browns starter with Brady Quinn, who was traded to the Broncos earlier this week.
In 2009, he managed to throw for 888 yards with three TDs and 10 interceptions over eight games (seven starts).
