St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada (AHN) – Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams is back to work after undergoing and recovering from a heart surgery performed in a U.S. hospital. He went through a heart valve repair surgery in Miami.

The operation became controversial because it seemed that Canadian hospitals could not perform the surgery that well the premier had to cross the border to seek medical treatment. The 60-year old Williams, however, defended his decision saying he followed the advice of his physician.

Williams expressed gratitude to Deputy Premier Kathy Dunderdale for running the government while he was in surgery and during recovery. William said in a statement, “It was a great comfort to know the province was left in such capable hands, and I thank not only her but my entire cabinet and caucus for their hard work and unwavering support over the past number of weeks. Now, I look forward to getting back full time working for the people of the province.”
