Iowa City, IA, United States (AHN) – After posting three consecutive losing seasons, the Iowa Hawkeyes have decided Monday to move in another direction by severing ties with men’s basketball head coach Todd Lickliter.
The decision was announced Monday by Iowa athletic director Gary Barta, who also cited the lagging attendance, dwindling revenue from ticket sales and contributions for the once-proud basketball program.
The Hawkeyes finished the 2009-10 season with only 10 wins and a school-record 22 losses.
In the hopes that Lickliter would replicate his successful stint at Butler, Iowa hired him days after being recognized by the National Association of Basketball Coaches as its Division I coach of the year in 2007.
Instead, Lickliter’s first season featured the most losses registered by a Hawkeyes squad in a single season.
During his six years as the Bulldogs head coach, Lickliter compiled a 131-61 mark and led Butler to the postseason four times, including two appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16.
Lickliter, 54, will be paid about $2.4 million in three installments over the next three years for the remainder of his seven-year contract, according to Barta.
