New York, NY, United States (AHN) – New York Islanders captain Doug Weight has decided to undergo surgery to repair his torn labrum and rotator cuff in his left shoulder.
Weight initially suffered the injury in November but finally opted for the surgery with the Isles slipping out of playoff contention.
With few games remaining before the postseason, the Islanders are on the brink of missing the playoffs for the fourth straight season. The Islanders are trailing the Bruins by nine points for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, which apparently weighed on Weight’s decision to engage in the delicate surgery.
Dr. Tony Minaci will perform the surgery on Thursday in Cleveland, Ohio. “It’s a pretty intrusive surgery coming but I’m going to approach it with aspirations to still play hockey. I still have that fire in my stomach when I hit the ice?I’m going to attack this like I’m 25 and have to get ready for camp, Weight told the New York Daily News.
“But if Thursday was my last game, I have no regrets. I’ve had an unbelievable career as far as enjoying myself and meeting people and playing the greatest game in the world.”
Weight played for six different NFL teams — New York Islanders, Anaheim Ducks, St. Louis Blues, Carolina Hurricanes, Edmonton Oilers, and New York Rangers – in 18 years.
He was selected to play in the NHL All-Star game four times and won the Stanley Cup with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2006.
Weight has compiled 274 goals and 1,024 points over his career.
