Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – The number of homeless military veterans in the United States has decreased by 18 percent since 2009, according to statistics released Wednesday by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

VA officials reported the current number of homeless veterans to be around 107,000, a decline from last year’s 131,000 and 2007’s 154,000.

The decrease is a positive sign for the VA, which late last year set a five-year deadline to eradicate homelessness among military veterans, according to reports.

Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki attributed the reduction to the joint efforts between federal, state and other organizations working together to solve the problem.

Shinseki’s approach seeks to prevent homelessness from occurring, according to reports.
