Talladega, AL, United States (AHN) – Next Tuesday 24 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams will assemble at Talladega Superspeedway for an early-season test session.
The onus of the one-day test will be the change of wings to spoilers, while also targeting a number of mechanical options in advance of the Aaron’s 499, which will be contested April 25 at Talladega.
“It’s a confirmation test for restrictor plates and gearing, and an opportunity for teams to work on their handling packages as we transition to the spoiler,” said Robin Pemberton, NASCAR’s vice president of competition.
Cup teams used larger carburetor restrictor-plate openings in the 2010 Daytona 500 and larger plate openings are expected for the Aaron’s 499 at Talladega.
At Daytona NASCAR mandated 63/64-inch-openings, the largest since in the plate’s 22-year history of use. The plate’s four openings restrict air flow to the engine, slowing the cars down. The larger openings mean more air, more horsepower and more speed.
With the spoiler soon returning to the cars as well more on-track testing will come March 23-24 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Both the Charlotte and Talladega tests are exceptions to the current testing policy as for the second consecutive season the Cup, Nationwide and Camping World Truck Series teams are not allowed to test at facilities that host national-series events.
