Atlanta, GA, United States (AHN) – Veteran defenseman Chris Chelios was called up by the Atlanta Thrashers from the team’s AHL affiliate- it was reported on ESPN.com Wednesday afternoon.

Chelios, 48, played 46 games for the AHL’s Chicago Wolves this season posting five goals and 17 assists.

He inked a two-way contract last week with the Thrashers.

The last time the Chicago native played for the NHL was last May during the Western Conference finals as a Detroit Red Wing.

The three-time Norris Trophy winner is simply astounded about the news.

“Can’t wait. Got to make the most out of this chance,” Chelios stated in a text message to ESPN.com.

Chelios has played for the Montreal Canadians, Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit.

It was reported that he declined to play for another NHL team in order to stay with the Wolves.

“Chris has been an outstanding leader and mentor for our young players in Chicago and his level of play has made him deserving of this opportunity,” Thrashers general manager Don Waddell said, according to STATS LLC and ESPN.com.
