Goettingen, Germany (AHN) – A baby in Germany born weighing just 275 grams (0.6 pounds) has survived and is now considered the lowest weight for a viable birth of a boy ever recorded.
Medical professionals believe that survival can not be achieved at birth weights below 350 grams (0.77 pounds).
The “miracle” boy born in June last year during the 25th week of pregnancy spent six months in intensive care and was finally discharged in December after gaining weight. When he left the hospital, he had grown to 3.7 kilograms (8.1 pounds).
Officials from Goettingen Hospital said they checked all available records of premature births worldwide and were unable to find a viable birth at a lower weight.
