Washington, DC, United States (AHN) – Apart from losing an international friendly against the Netherlands in Amsterdam Wednesday, the United States also lost midfielder Stuart Holden to a leg injury.
The former Houston Dynamo midfielder, who is now playing for the English Premiere League’s Bolton Wanderers, fractured his right fibula.
The 24-year-old Holden sustained the injury following a tackle by Manchester City midfielder Nigel de Jong in a 2-1 friendly setback to the Netherlands.
Holden, who joined Bolton in January on a short-term deal, but is reportedly extended until the end of next season, is expected to be sidelined at least six weeks.
The latest development may affect his availability for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
The United States’ World Cup roster is expected to be announced sometime in early May.
At present the American squad is dealing with a number of injuries – - Hannover defender Steve Cherundolo (shoulder); Fulham midfielder Clint Dempsey (right knee); Eintracht Frankfurt midfielder Ricardo Clark (right calf) and Aarhus midfielder Benny Feilhaber (ankle).
Meanwhile defender Oguchi Onyewu, who is also playing for AC Milan, is coming off a knee surgery in October, while Sochaux forward Charlie Davies is trying to bounce back from injuries as a result a car crash last October.
The U.S. is slated to open their World Cup bid against England in Rustenburg on June 12.
