Copenhagen, Denmark (AHN) – A Danish woman who received an ovarian tissue transplant following a bout with cancer gave birth to two babies in separate pregnancies, her doctor said this week.

Dr. Yding Andersen reported in the journal Human Reproduction Thursday that the tissue was removed and frozen during her cancer treatment, then put back once his patient, Stinne Holm Bergholdt, was in remission.

She gave birth to a girl in February 2007 and another daughter in September 2008.

Seven children worldwide have been born to mothers who went through the procedure, but Bergholdt is the first to have given birth twice in separate pregnancies.

Bergholdt was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma in 2004 at the age of 27. Her cancer treatment was effective but caused menopause. Before being treated, part of her right ovary was removed and frozen.
