Vancouver, BC, Canada (AHN) – Monique Lamoureux recorded a hat trick, helping Team USA remain undefeated in a 9-1 destruction of Sweden in the women’s ice hockey playoff semifinals Monday at the Vancouver Games.
With the win, the United States advanced into the gold medal game against either two-time defending gold medalist Canada or Finland.
It was a sweet victory for the Americans, who avenged a shootout loss to Sweden four years ago in the semis at the Turin Games.
Karen Thatcher, Kelli Stack and Caitlin Cahow each tallied a goal and an assist for the United States, one of the favorites in women’s hockey.
Jessie Vetter finished with 11 saves for the victors.
The women’s hockey tournament has turned into a two-team race between the Americans and host Canada.
The United States, along with local favorites, remain undefeated through the preliminary round of the tournament.
