HARRISBURG, Oct. 8 – State Rep. Camille “Bud” George, D-74 of Houtzdale, said families opening a TAP 529 college savings account by Oct. 13 will save on enrollment fees and be eligible for $35,000 in scholarship accounts.
“Families opting to enroll by Tuesday will have the $50 enrollment fee waived and be eligible for one $25,000 Guaranteed Savings Plan account and one of four $2,500 accounts,” George said. “Saving instead of paying college loans can save families as much as 50 percent of the costs of a college education.”
Information on the sweepstakes and the TAP 529 Guaranteed Savings and TAP 529 Investment plans offered though the state Treasury Department is available online. All scholarship winners will be selected by random drawing on or about Oct. 16.
“Both TAP 529 plans offer significant tax advantages,” Rep. George said. “As much as $13,000 may be deducted annually from state taxable income for each beneficiary.”
George also urged Clearfield County residents considering enrolling in the Valley Forge Military College to contact his Harrisburg office at (1) 866 354-0890.
“A program is being launched where each state senator and state representative would be authorized to appoint one qualified student to the military college,” George said. “The appointment would include an $8,500 scholarship, paid by Valley Forge, for each year of the two-year military college.”
