CLEARFIELD – A proposed river access in Lawrence Township is on choppy water.
In 2007 Lawrence Township applied for a grant from the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission to use as a match toward a Department of Community and Economic Development grant for a river access point to the Susquehanna River.
The access point is located behind Rainbow Car Wash near the Hyde Bridge. The land the access point will rest on is being donated by Jim and Sherri Collins, and consists of 1.2 acres. The grant money will be used for a concrete boat launch for both canoes and boats with motors, a parking area and an access road from Washington Avenue.
On Tuesday Supervisor Chairman Bill Lawhead read from a letter sent to the township by the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission. According to the letter the township’s project was passed over for other proposed projects in the commonwealth.
Lawhead said that according to the letter there were a number of project proposals, making the grant highly competitive.
According to the letter the PFBC will accept more proposals in the near future. Township Secretary/Treasurer Barb Shaffner warned that they run out of time with their other grant.
