Golden Tide Take Care of Brockway 10-6

CURWENSVILLE – Curwensville High School’s baseball squad gained a measure of revenge Tuesday afternoon as they dumped the Rovers of Brockway 10-6 on the Tide’s turf. Earlier this season Brockway edged Curwensville 6-5. With the victory the Tide move their 2008 record to 13-5.

The Tide started out strong by scoring five runs in the first inning, then putting up another four in the second before the Rovers knew what hit them. Curwensville took and held the lead the entire contest although the Rovers did score four in the top of the third to keep the game a little in doubt. But not much.

Curwensville banged out 11 hits in the victory as catcher Cory Bloom led the way with three hits. Wes McGarry and Jed Greslick each had two with Greslick smashing a pair of doubles on the day.

Tide head coach Ryan Briskar said afterwards, “Cory Bloom had an all around outstanding day, going 3 for 4 and playing great defense for us. And Jed Greslick had another big day at the plate with those two doubles.”

Curwensville would score a lone run in their half of the fourth to finish with ten runs while Brockway would pick up two more in the top of the fifth to finish with six.

Sophomore Sam Gardner went five plus innings to pick up the win for Curwensville. Tide senior Justin Johnston finished the final two innings to preserve the win.

Briskar was happy with both Greslick and Johnston, “Sam (Gardner) pitched well and was able to pick up the win. He threw hard today and had fairly good control.” About Johnston, the Tide coach mentioned, “J. J. (Justin Johnston) came in and pitched extremely well. He did a nice job of mixing his pitches and also had good control.”

Curwensville now travels to Glendale Wednesday afternoon to meet the Vikings in a Moshannon Valley League (MVL) game at 4 pm. Should Curwensville win they would clinch the 2008 MVL championship. The Golden Tide are 6-1 in league play and defeated Glendale 14-3 earlier in the year.
