CLEARFIELD – PennDOT District 2 cautions drivers about low visibility conditions as another winter storm approaches.
“Freezing rain is predicted in parts of our area which will offer some challenges for motorists and PennDOT snowplow operators” said PennDOT Assistant District Executive for Maintenance, Ron Keim. “Motorists who must drive are reminded to slow down and maintain a safe following distance”.
As the winter storm approaches, PennDOT offers the following safety tips:
-Headlights: A new law which took effect in January 2007 requires motorists to turn on their headlights anytime their vehicles wipers are in continuous or intermittent use due to weather or other atmospheric conditions such as fog or mist.
Motorists who do not comply with the law could face a fine of $25, but with fees and other associated costs, the penalty would approach $100.
-Turn Signals: Before making any turn, you must signal first. Use your turn signal when turning onto another roadway or traffic lane or when leaving a parked position. During a winter storm event with low visibility conditions, drivers may experience problems judging speed and distance. It is important for drivers to use their turn signals to let other drivers know their plans. Using your turn signals gives other drivers more time to adjust their driving so you can turn safely.
