STATE COLLEGE – Republican Congressional candidate Derek Walker (PA-5) kicked of his congressional campaign Tuesday in State College with an outline of proposals aimed at providing incentives to boost the region’s economy.
More than 150 people gathered as Walker outlined several proposals to rejuvenate the area’s sluggish economy.
“We all know the issues and challenges that are ahead. Our region and country are facing some potential economic pitfalls and I believe that our next Congressman must outline a proactive agenda focused on providing solutions to these challenges,” said Walker.
Walker proposed creating a more favorable business climate for businesses and job creators by increasing the investment tax credit. He also proposed making college tuition tax deductible for all individuals.
“Education is the key to our future and we must start investing in our citizens now,” declared Walker.
Other initiatives proposed by Walker included updating the aging infrastructure and developing a national energy plan which reduces dependence on foreign oil.
“Many of our roads and bridges which were built in the 1950s and 1960s are deteriorating and must be repaired,” said Walker.
He also called for completing missing links in the transportation system, such as making U.S. Route 322 a four-lane highway through Centre County, linking the roadway to Interstates 99 and 80.
Also on hand for the kickoff was former state Sen. J. Doyle Corman, who agreed to serve as Honorary Campaign Chairman for Walker’s campaign committee.
“I am pleased to have the support of Sen. Corman, who is one of the most respected individuals in the Commonwealth. I would like to model my career as a public servant after him,” said Walker.
Walker said that he believes he has what it takes to be an effective Congressman and he would be honored to represent the 5th Congressional District in Washington, D.C.
