Hyde–Very often in high school basketball a game can be a tale of two halves, and that was exactly the story Wednesday night when the Bisons took on the Dubois Beavers on Senior Night in front of a packed house. The Bisons\’ up and down play lead to falling behind with with 5 minutes to go in the game. Fortunately for the Clearfield Bisons they were able to get some key plays in the remaining minutes to come out on top 62-58.
\”We haven\’t played a game in eight days. We had really good practices in between games, but you are still going to make mistakes if you haven\’t played in a while,\” commented Coach Campman.
In the first quarter the Bisons came out with an all senior starting lineup of Joel Fox, Nathan Greenland, Todd Hryn, Drew Hipps, and David Ryan. Clearfield\’s seniors were determined to win the game out of the gate. Fox was able to score Clearfield\’s first five points of the game. Once the Bisons usual starting five were in the game they used a 13-5 run fueled by Matt Shiner who lead all scorers with 24 points on the night to go up 18-11 at the end of the period.
\”It\’s always great when you get a chance to give your seniors a start. They\’ve worked hard their whole careers and it\’s nice to get them the chance to start. Joel was a huge boost for us tonight, he kept us in the game at the beginning and was able to score seven points in the first half. It\’s great that we were able to pull out a win, because it gives the seniors something good to remember for the rest of their life,\” said Campman.
In the second quarter the Bisons continued to show how badly they wanted to win the game for their seniors as Shiner and Todd Hryn heated up. The Bisons top two scorers on the season would finish the half with 12 and 9 points respectively. The Bisons used their hot start to head into the half 36-24.
In the third period the Bisons came out like an entirely different team. At the beginning of the quarter the Bisons went on a 7-0 run to go up 19 but were only able to muster one more point in the rest of the quarter. The Beavers on the other hand were able to force numerous turnovers and knock down multiple long distance three\’s to close the gap and only trail 44-41.
\”We relied on runs and Matt\’s hot shooting in the first half to get a decent lead, but in the second half we came out selfish. We tried to go one on one the entire third quarter and we know not to do that. Twice Parker (Herrington) drove down the lane with guys in his face and just slipped and fell and Dubois got layups off of it both times. We just played a really bad third quarter and let them back in the game,\” said Campman.
In the fourth the Bisons continued to play selfish through the first few minute of the period eventually surrendering the lead for the first time since the five minute mark of the first quarter. That\’s when Drew Hipps and Matt Shiner took the game into their own hands. Hipp\’s rebounding and Shiners shooting helped Clearfield regain the lead in the closing minutes, and come out with a 62-48 victory.
\”Drew had a great fourth quarter he had two big rebounds off of missed foul shots and was able to put them back in. Cruise (Kerr) also made a few key plays in the quarter. They both struggled in the first half, but were able to make big plays down the stretch,\” commented Campman
\”You\’ve got to hand it to Dubois though, they probably played their best game of the year tonight. Their two guards were able to knock down some really tough shots and keep them in the game. It was much like when we played Curwensville earlier in the year. Right now we are 17-5 and we have an outside chance at winning 20 games and that has only been done one time in school history. We want to win our remaining games and have a full head of steam heading into the playoffs and give ourselves a chance at the District Title,\” said Campman on his final thoughts of the game.
Clearfield is back in action Friday night when they travel to Bellefonte to take on the Red Raiders in a non league game.
