CLEARFIELD – Clearfield Borough Council designated Oct. 7-13 White Cane Awareness Week recently.
The proclaimation notes that the white cane is the official tool used by the blind and visually impaired for safe and independent travel.
Lions International was the first group to declare the white cane the official travel device of the blind and visually impaired in the 1930s, and since then, all Lions clubs have worked to develop and expand such programs. The effort has also branched out to include guide dog training programs.
In addition to the special week, Oct. 13 is designated as White Cane Education and Safety Day.
