CLEARFIELD – The first day of the 147th annual Clearfield County Fair brought with it high temperatures, big crowds and the naming of the 2007 Clearfield County Fair Queen.
Danielle Maines, a 19-year-old Clearfield woman, earned the honor of representing the Clearfield County Fair.
Maines was the second runner-up in the 2006 competition.
Maines spoke of the fair’s rich tie to agriculture, something of which Maines knows well as she will enter her sophomore year at the Pennsylvania State University in the fall with her major coursework in agriculture.
Maines’ court includes first runner-up Leah Carr of Morridsale, second runner-up Melinda Korb of Morrisdale, third runner-up Lydia Gearhart of Clearfield and fourth runner-up Vanessa Johnson of Grampian.
Both the first runner-up and the second runner-up were on the court last year, Carr as second runner-up in 20006 and Korb as first runner-up.
The ceremonies also included a farewell from outgoing 2006 Clearfield County Fair Queen Sarah Elling.
To the new queen, she said, “Enjoy every moment of your year.”
And a busy year it will be for Maines. In addition to speaking and making appearances, the queen will compete in the state competition in January. The past six years have seen the queen’s court fundraising for Children’s Miracle Network. During that time, $60,000 has been raised for the cause.
Before making her last wave as the queen, Elling said, “It has been my honor to represent the great Clearfield County Fair.”
The fair continues through Saturday with plenty of events each day.
