Lady Tide Shutout Sheffield for 8th Straight Win

SHEFFIELD—-Sophomore Holly Lansberry threw a three hit shutout Thursday afternoon as the Curwensville Lady Tide won for the eighth straight time. The 9-0 win gives Curwensville a sparkling 17-2 record with one game left on the regular season. The Tide had blanked Sheffield earlier this year on April 10th , 13-0. The Lady Wolverines fall to 4-12 on the 2007 campaign.

Senior catcher Dana Johnson hit a milestone in the victory as her first inning triple gave her 100 career hits. Johnson had two hits against the Lady Wolverines as did Dani Struble and Tess Bloom.

Shannon McDonald blasted her third home run of the season. The sophomore right fielder launched a monster solo round tripper to left in the top half of the seventh. Samantha Haney had a triple while Struble picked up a double for the victorious Lady Tide. Ronna Knepp and Ashley Demchak each had two RBI’s for Curwensville. With the win, Lansberry, who struck out 13 Lady Wolverines, moves her record to an outstanding 15-2.

Head coach Allen Leigey said afterwards, “ It was really great to witness Dana (Johnson) getting her 100th career hit. She has worked so hard and it has been just great to coach her.” Leigey also talked about McDonald’s seventh inning blast, “One of the girls took a rough measurement and estimated it to be about 265 feet. That was just a rocket Shannon hit.”

Curwensville hosts Brockway in the regular season finale today at 4:15 pm in a game that is more than just anything but routine. The game is not lost on coach Leigey and his team when he stated, “We have some real serious unfinished business to take care of against Brockway after the tough, questionable loss we took up there. The girls and all the coaches really want this one.” The Lady Rovers beat Curwensville at Brockway, 5-4, back on April 23rd in a game with several controversial calls taking place.

The Lady Tide are seeded third in the upcoming District 9 “A” playoffs that start next week. Curwensville gets a bye in the first round and will play the winner of #11 seed DuBois Central Catholic and #6 seed Keystone at home next Wednesday at 4:30 pm.
