CURWENSVILLE—-After two innings in Wednesday afternoon\’s baseball game between DuBois Central Catholic (DCC) and Curwensville, the Tide found themselves in total control 5-1. Then it was just simply over as Curwensville’s offense went south and one play on defense opened the door for a DCC win 6-5. Or perhaps a gift from the Tide is a better way to put it.
Head coach Ryan Briskar said afterwards that “We just completely shut down offensively after the second inning and could not, for whatever reason, get it going again. That just killed our chances to comeback for a win.”
Tide first baseman, junior Trevor Horton, had three RBI’s in the first two innings. One on a walk in the first and two in the second on a single. Ben McGary, a sophomore, scored twice for Curwensville to help give them a lead after two innings. Junior Brett McCracken picked up two RBI’s. Then, as earlier mentioned, the offensive lights went out for the Tide.
DCC scored one run in the top of the first but it was the top of the third that sealed Curwensville’s doom. A hard hit grounder that was just too much for senior third baseman Justin McGary to handle allowed two runs to score and also kept the four run third inning going for the DCC. Briskar quickly came to the defense of McGary saying, “ One very tough play that didn’t go our way in the third. Justin gave it a try, but it was just a real tough ball to field.”
DuBois Central, with only two hits the entire afternoon, scored the last run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. That proved to be the game winner for the visitors. Nate Brennan, in relief, came in and shut down the Tide over the last 5 1/3 innings, striking out seven, and giving up no hits, no runs in the process to pick up the victory. Senior Justin Johnston took the loss in relief going only one-third of an inning in the fourth.
Curwensville now is 4-2 on the year and travels to Moshannon Valley on Friday afternoon to take on the Black Knight’s at 4pm. You can also follow the Tide baseball season on-line by logging onto…..
