BROCKWAY—-It was definitely ugly, but it was also definitely a win as Curwensville tripped over themselves in beating the Lady Rovers 49-44 Thursday night. The victory gave the Lady Tide a 11-3 record and their sixth straight win since losing to Clearfield at the Penns Manor Holiday Tournament.
Curwensville came out sluggish and sloppy against a winless Brockway five who now are 0-15 on the season. The Tide did jump out a 16-8 first quarter lead thanks to Senior Jackie White scoring 8 of her game high 20. And it just wasn’t that easy as the Lady Tide had numerous turnovers that plagued them all night. Even with a 28-18 halftime lead coach Vic Gearhart was not pleased with what he was watching.
Senior Dani Struble was hit with her third personal early in the second and her fourth with only 14 seconds gone in the third stanza. White picked up the pace with 8 in third quarter as the Tide stretched the margin to 39-27.
The Lady Rovers just wouldn’t go away as they outscored Curwensville 17-10 in the fourth and actually pulled to within 4 with just three minutes to go. Struble then scored four quick points to get the Curwensville girls over the hump.
Following White’s 20, Struble chipped in with 15 while seeing only limited playing time for being in early foul trouble. Junior Vicky Bennett had 11 for Brockway and sophomore Sasha Fields scored 10.
Curwensville won the junior varsity contest 20-19 in overtime.
The Lady Tide travel to Moshannon Valley next Tuesday. Game time is 7 pm since there will not be a junior varsity game.
