CLEARFIELD – The Clearfield-Lawrence Township Airport should be in possession of a brand new plow truck by mid-February.
Airport Manager Dick Shaffer said there have been some delays in getting the modifications completed on the truck, such as the plow and spreader attachment, but Shaffer has been assured that the airport’s truck is next to go in for changes.
Once the truck is delivered and paid for, the airport will apply for reimbursement for the cost through the Department of Transportation, Bureau of Aviation.
Even though the truck will be here soon, Shaffer said he doesn’t want to use it anytime soon.
“I hope we don’t have to plow 1 inch of snow this year.”
So far this season, the airport was plowed once.
In the event that there is icing at the airport, urea, a substance commonly used by farmers for fertilizer, is used because it is not corrosive to aluminum. The new truck will make it easier to spread the urea with the spreader attachment.
As an added benefit, the urea made for a more lush landscape at the top of the hill.
“That’s why we had so much green grass around the runway,” Shaffer said, adding that once the ice melted, water and urea would run to the outside of the runways, creating a patch of extremely healthy grass.
