SHEFFIELD — Senior Dani Struble matched her career high with 31 points, claiming the top spot in District 9 girls basketball scoring with a 20.5 average, as Curwensville downed Sheffield 57-43 in a non-league game Friday night.
Jackie White, also a senior, scored 14 points and had 11 rebounds for the Lady Tide, which stands 9-3 after its second four-game winning streak of the season.
Struble scored 10 points in each of the first two quarters and had eight in the third period. The senior guard cashed 11 of 15 free throw attempts.
\”She\’s having an outstanding season,\” Lady Tide coach Vic Gearhart said. \”She\’s a good athlete, and she makes things happen.\”
Struble and White produced all but two of the Lady Tide\’s points in the first half, which ended with Curwensville on top 32-20.
\”It wasn\’t that close,\” coach Vic Gearhart said. \”We gave up some late buckets that let them slip back in. But we came out and scored eight straight points in the third quarter, and they never really got back into it.
\”We played really well at times, and then we had some let-ups. When you\’re in a game like that, it\’s hard to keep your intensity, but we have to learn to play hard for four quarters.\”
Tessa Vargas tallied 11 points in the fourth period to lead the Lady Wolverines with 19. Leading pointmaker Amanda Craker is sidelined with a shoulder injury.
Sheffield, which fell to 5-9 with its sixth consecutive loss, had 29 turnovers. Curwensville lost possession of the ball 18 times.
Lady Tide junior Holly Fink missed the game because of a sprained wrist.
Curwensville will be on the road for two games next week, Monday against Harmony in a key Moshannon Valley League test and Thursday against Brockway in an Allegheny Mountain League South Division contest.
In the junior varsity game, Sheffield prevailed 41-29 behind Caryn Copley\’s 12 points. Tess Bloom led Curwensville with 11.
