CURWENSVILLE – Curwensville Area School District students had higher percentage scores in reading and math Pennsylvania System of School Assessment tests compared to the rest of the state, according to numbers released by the Curwensville Board of Education.
The overall percentage of students in the Curwensville Area School District that were advanced and proficient were 74.1-percent, as compared to the state, which averaged 67.7-percent.
The overall percentage of students in the Curwensville Area School district that were advanced and proficient were 70.4-percent, as compared to the state, which averaged 66.8-percent.
“We’re pleased, but we’re not satisfied,” said Norman Hatten, superintendent.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, the testing is a “standards based criterion-referenced assessment used to measure a student’s attainment of the academic standards while also determining the degree to which school programs enable students to attain proficiency of the standards. Every Pennsylvania student in grades 3 through 8 and grade 11 is assessed in reading and math. Every Pennsylvania student in grades 5, 8 and 11 is assessed in writing.”
Advanced levels indicate in-depth understanding of the subject, while satisfactory levels indicate a solid understanding of the skills.
